They are now essentially one large town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-saint-rapha-l\">Saint-Rapha\u00ebl<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint-Rapha\u00ebl <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/G4nW6wepi9bVw9NCA\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> is a family-friendly holiday resort town located on the French Riviera midway between <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Saint-Tropez (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/iconicalps.com\/saint-tropez-travel-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saint-Tropez<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Cannes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/iconicalps.com\/cannes-travel-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cannes<\/a>. Its heyday was in the late 19th century when beautiful Belle \u00c9poque mansions were built along its seafront overlooking the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, during WWII, all of the medieval buildings (except for one church) were destroyed by bombs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/iconicalps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/saint-raphael-travel-guide-800x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14184\" width=\"777\" height=\"485\"\/><figcaption>Saint-Rapha\u00ebl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst Saint-Rapha\u00ebl isn\u2019t filled with \u2018must-see\u2019 tourist attractions, it is one of the most low-key, charming and welcoming resorts along the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur. You can easily spend a leisurely day here. There are some attractive beaches within walking distance of the town center and a fine selection of stylish caf\u00e9s and restaurants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First impressions for many visitors are the beautiful\u00a0Belle \u00c9poque buildings\u00a0which overlook the promenade. These were destroyed during the Second World War and have been rebuilt in their original style. Just inland from the harbor stands the\u00a0Basilique Notre Dame de la Victoire, <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/iwx2Lp8r93ti8YQf7\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> which dominates the skyline of Saint Rapha\u00ebl. Dating back to 1887 this beautiful church is the town\u2019s main architectural and religious attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a small Old Town which is home to a number of interesting attractions and is well worth wandering around. It is located around the medieval\u00a0Eglise Sant Raf\u00e9u <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ukJH4v5ZnNYQDrEr5\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a>, which houses the\u00a0Mus\u00e9e Arch\u00e9ologique de Saint-Rapha\u00ebl. This museum has some impressive artifacts discovered in the region &#8211;some of which date back to prehistoric times&#8211; together with an underwater archaeology section. Visitors can climb to the top of its tower to get great views over the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;d prefer to spend a few hours relaxing in the sun, there are some lovely beaches within easy walking distance of Le Vieux Port. The nearest ones are&nbsp;Plage du Frejus <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/iaSs1UxgauPehDtV6\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> to the west and&nbsp;Plage du Veillat&nbsp;<a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/kNBxKPdY8aT4m14H6\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> to the south-east. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-frejus\">Frejus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/iconicalps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/l-esterel-massif-travel-guide-frejus-1-800x356.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15930\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fr\u00e9jus <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/neCNgrCLwU4iZjDv5\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> was the first naval base in the Mediterranean Roman, a thriving city full of emotions and stories. Today, it is a city of art, history and culture. Fr\u00e9jus has preserved several monuments from its past. The town possesses an important historic and architectural heritage, with many Roman remains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magnificent Fr\u00e9jus Cathedral <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/e3PjcCdD8smdcgzk8\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> is a national monument with a history dating back as far as the 5th century. There\u2019s also a&nbsp;Roman aqueduct&nbsp;in the town center. The baptistery, which dates from the 5th century, is one of the oldest in France. In the cloister, the archaeological museum contains objects excavated in Fr\u00e9jus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/iconicalps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/l-esterel-travel-guide-frejus-1-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15932\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Port Fr\u00e9jus marina and the fine sand beach at the end of Fr\u00e9jus Beach <a class=\"iconic-map-pin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ZCtv4MuS6rZtnEoq9\" target=\"_blank\"><i class=\"fa fa-map-marker fa-lg\"><\/i><\/a> make the town a popular seaside resort. All nautical pleasures are available in Fr\u00e9jus (bathing in sea water, fishing, coastal shipping in the coves, scuba diving, water skiing, surfing windsurfing, kayaking, kitesurfing, sailing&#8230;), without forgetting the Provencal getaways, walks in the picturesque narrow streets, gourmet indulgences (truffle, honey, olive oil, wine &#8220;and Castles of Fr\u00e9jus&#8221; AOC Fr\u00e9jus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Lenth%C3%A9ric\" target=\"_blank\" data-schema-attribute=\"mentions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Charles Lenth\u00e9ric<\/a>, a prolific writer on the ancient monuments of France, visited the Fr\u00e9jus area in the latter half of the nineteenth century. He almost believed he was in Italy, as his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/The_Riviera_Ancient_and_Modern\/oYPSAAAAMAAJ\" target=\"_blank\" data-schema-attribute=\"mentions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>The Riviera Ancient and Modern<\/em> (1895)<\/a> testifies: &#8220;The whole effect of this southern landscape [in Fr\u00e9jus] is much more Italian in the classical sense of the word than are many celebrated sites in Italy itself. The character of the land is the same, the sky is the same, the general air of sadness is the same as on the banks of the Tiber, and the Roman ruins scattered all around render the resemblance still more striking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening, the many bars on the seaside promenade offer you a delicious glass of house wine and fresh fried chips without making much of a dent in your pockets, while the nearby souvenir shops distract the shopaholic in you. You&#8217;ll be stopped by random locals who will strike up a conversation.
